Faith and forgiveness in south-western Spain

A first-person account of Los Empalaos, an extraordinary Holy Week tradition in Jerez de los Caballeros, Extremadura. As both writer and photographer, I documented the people, preparations and procession from within, after being granted exceptional access by the Brotherhood of the Penitents of the True Cross.

The access allowed me to go beyond photographing the spectacle and document the people, beliefs and personal commitment behind the tradition.

The article was approved and laid out for the April 2025 issue, but was subsequently displaced by breaking news coverage following the death of Pope Francis and was not published.
